That is the moment to slow down. Risk first means defining the conditions you can accept before the potential reward starts shaping your judgement.<\/p><p>Ask three questions: What invalidates the idea? What exposure am I considering? What will I do if the market behaves differently from my expectation? If any answer is unclear, the trade is not ready for your process.<\/p><p>You cannot control the next price move. You can prepare your order, understand the instrument and decide when to stay out. Those decisions do not guarantee protection, but they make your assumptions visible.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"size\"><h2>Position size changes the consequence<\/h2><p>The same market move can have a very different effect depending on position size. Decide the planned monetary loss first, then check whether the size and exit assumptions fit that plan. Available margin is not the same thing as money you are prepared to lose.<\/p><div class=\"pa-callout\"><h3>A simplified example<\/h3><p>Imagine a hypothetical account of \u20ac10,000 and a chosen planned loss of \u20ac50. If the distance to the planned exit represents \u20ac5 of loss per unit, ten units would represent \u20ac50 before costs.<\/p><p><strong>10 units \u00d7 \u20ac5 per unit = \u20ac50 planned loss.<\/strong><\/p><p>Double the size and the same move represents \u20ac100. Widen the exit distance without reducing size and the planned loss increases too. The numbers illustrate the relationship; they are not a recommended risk percentage or position.<\/p><\/div><p>Real calculations also depend on contract size, tick or pip value, account currency, spread, commission and execution. Check your broker\u2019s specifications. For leveraged products, margin is only part of the picture.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"execution\"><h2>A planned exit is not a guaranteed result<\/h2><p>A stop order needs to be understood as an order mechanism, not a promise that the loss will match your calculation. In its guidance on stock stop orders, FINRA explains that the stop becomes a market order when triggered and may execute at a substantially different price in volatile conditions. A stop-limit order introduces a different trade-off: the order may not execute. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finra.org\/investors\/insights\/stop-orders-factors-consider-during-volatile-markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-penci-link=\"external\">Read FINRA\u2019s explanation \u2197<\/a><\/p><p>That guidance concerns stocks. For your own instrument, check how the broker handles triggers, gaps, liquidity and order execution. Avoid treating a planned loss as an absolute maximum unless the specific product and contractual terms actually provide that protection.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"exposure\"><h2>Look beyond a single position<\/h2><p>Several open trades can depend on the same market idea. Three positions are not automatically three independent risks. Ask what would happen if the shared assumption failed at the same time.<\/p><p>Keep a simple exposure record: each position\u2019s planned loss, the combined planned loss and any common drivers. These figures are planning estimates, not a worst-case guarantee. Consider how existing positions affect the room available for another decision.<\/p><p>Also write down when you will stop opening new trades: after a defined session limit, when your execution becomes inconsistent, or when you cannot assess the conditions.
